While it operates on behalf of the Department of Social Development (DSD), SASSA maintains its independence while being overseen jointly by the DSD and the Ministry of Social Development. 

In 2022, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer, leading SASSA in its vital mission to provide essential social assistance to the people of South Africa.
